UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BENEFITS & PENSION
Member Illness & Injury
Illness or Injury – Work-Related
If you are receiving benefits from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) for a work-related injury or illness, your coverage under the UA Local 67 Benefits Plan may continue for up to 12 months, depending on your employer’s hourly contributions as required by Ontario legislation. Contact UA Local 67 Benefits to confirm your eligibility.
Illness or Injury – Not Work-Related
Notify UA Local 67 Benefits if you are unable to work due to an illness or injury. You may be eligible for SUB payments while receiving EI Sickness benefits. If your illness or injury does not qualify for EI Sickness benefits, or your EI claim is exhausted, UA Local 67 Benefits can assist you with a Short Term Disability application through Canada Life.
If you qualify, Short Term Disability (STD) benefits will be paid for 26 weeks, then Long Term Disability (LTD) benefits, if applicable, will follow once your STD benefits end. While receiving LTD benefits, you will continue to earn credits in the pension plan – even though you are not working. You will be credited with 100 hours of work for each month you are on LTD and remain a member of UA Local 67 in good standing. Hours will be prorated for part months. You will not earn credits during periods of STD.
Failing to notify us may result in delays or denial of your SUB or STD claims. Canada Life is not responsible for claims submitted more than 6 months after your injury or 6 months plus 7 days for an illness. SUB claims must be received by UA Local 67 Benefits within 90 days following the date your EI Report was processed.

Shortened Life Expectancy
If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness with a prognosis of less than 24 months to live, you have options with your Life Insurance and your Pension:
- You can contact UA Local 67 Benefits to request an advance payout of 50% of your Life Insurance, to a maximum of $25,000 (or up to $5,000 for members with the Local 666 Retiree Life benefit).
- You can contact UA Local 67 Benefits if you want to withdraw your pension. Your spouse must also sign the form as no further payments will be made to survivors.
