Your Health Care Spending Account

The Health Care Spending Account (HCSA) adds flexibility to your UA Local 67 Benefits Welfare Plan, to help tailor your coverage to your and your family’s unique needs. Here’s what you need to know about your HCSA.

Eligibility

You are eligible for the HCSA if:

  • You are an eligible and active member of the UA Local 67 Benefits Welfare Plan, or
  • You are an active Member of Local 67 currently out-of-benefit who has worked a minimum of 1200 hours in the last year or
  • You are a qualified Apprentice.

Annual HCSA Credit

Your UA Local 67 Benefits Plan assigns $750 of credits each January 1st—or the date you become eligible for benefits—into your HCSA. These credits can be used to reimburse eligible medical and dental expenses that you or your eligible dependents incur with that same year. The HCSA offers members flexibility in choosing what health care they need, allowing them to use their HCSA credits to cover eligible health, vision, and dental care expenses not covered by the Welfare Plan.

Any HCSA credits not used by December 31st expire, and are not carried forward to the next year. To use these credits, any claims must be received by GreenShield by January 31 of the following year. Note that future HCSA credits (if any) are subject to change at the beginning of each year based on the financial status of the Welfare Trust Fund.

Eligible HCSA Expenses

Your HCSA covers a wide range of health and dental expenses such as medications, medical equipment, eyeglasses, paramedical practitioners and orthodontic expenses, as well as co-payments or deductibles. The list of covered expenses is defined by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA)’s Medical Expense Tax Credit.

Learn what’s covered by viewing the list of eligible HCSA expenses on GreenShield+ online or in the App. You can also view eligible medical expenses on the CRA website.

The HCSA cannot be used to cover expenses you paid with a gift card, or where you were already reimbursed (e.g., by your UA Local 67 Benefits Plan, your spouse’s plan, or a government plan).

If you are self-paying for your benefits, you may claim the health and dental premium through your HCSA. To do so, contact the office to request a receipt for the premium you paid. Please note that premiums for Life and Disability coverage cannot be claimed through your HCSA.
