Who Runs the UA Local 67 Benefits Welfare Plan?
The plan is managed by a Board of Trustees made up of elected union members and the UA Canada-appointed Business Manager. They work with professional advisors and UA Local 67 Benefits staff to ensure the plan is well managed and secure.
How Your Welfare Plan is Funded
Employer contributions made on behalf of all plan members are held in the Welfare Trust Fund. The plan’s fund is managed by the Board of Trustees of UA Local 67 Benefits, who choose professional investment managers to invest the fund’s assets based on the Board’s guidelines. The investments in the Welfare Trust Fund are used to subsidize the required group benefits deductions rates, to keep them below the actual cost of insurance and administration costs. The fund’s assets are solely used to pay the costs associated with the UA Local 67 Benefits Plan.
Claims for Health, Dental, Life, and Short Term Disability are paid directly out of the Welfare Trust Fund, along with the insurer’s administrative fees and taxes. The Welfare Trust Fund also covers the premiums for Long Term Disability and Travel Medical Insurance.
What is Benefits Fraud and How It Affects You
Benefits fraud refers to any abuse, misuse, or overutilization of the plan as well as inappropriate health provider billing practices—whether intentional or not. All beneficiaries of the UA Local 67 Benefits Plan are affected by fraud as fraudulent claims paid by the Trust Fund limit the plan’s ability to provide benefits.
